Recalling Connections Through Ching Ming Festival

“This festival is a time of reverence, deeply connecting us with the natural world and the generations that came before us. Our family comes together to walk through the lush green spaces that serve as the final resting places of our forebears—a journey of remembrance and honor.”

Today marks Ching Ming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, a special moment honored in Hong Kong and other regions of China for more than 2,500 years.

Our very own Kennis Lam, Digital Content Manager, at Meyer Labs, shares what this cultural moment represents for her heritage, how it deepens her family’s connection to one another, and of course, the traditional dishes they enjoy on this special day.

As Ching Ming Festival approaches, I'm reminded of the deep cultural heritage we honor here in Hong Kong.

This festival is a time of reverence, deeply connecting us with the natural world and the generations that came before us. Our family comes together to walk through the lush green spaces that serve as the final resting places of our forebears—a journey of remembrance and honor.

Armed with traditional offerings — flowers, roast pork belly, steamed chicken, rice wine and fresh fruits — we gather around our ancestors' graves. We light incense and joss paper, sending up fragrant smoke as a signal of our presence and respect. We clean the graves, repaint the headstone inscriptions, and clear any overgrowth, a gesture to honor the deceased and ensure their comfort in the afterlife.

This ritual extends beyond respect for our ancestors; it's a profound opportunity to strengthen our family bonds. After the ceremony, we share the food we've brought in a communal meal that is as much a part of the day's significance as the sweeping itself. It's a moment of collective joy and togetherness, a cherished end to the day's solemn rites.

Ching Ming is not only about remembering the past; it is also a special moment that fosters connections among individuals. These traditions keep our family close and full of love.

At Meyer Labs, we cherish the vibrant diversity and rich cultural tapestry woven by our global team, spanning from the bustling streets of Hong Kong to the vibrant neighborhoods of San Francisco. We are committed to sharing these stories, and hope that it ignites a passion for the unique cultural and culinary traditions across the globe. Thanks for joining us!
